Rupee At 39.43 Against US Dollar

The rupee on Jan 2 ended marginally down at 39.43/44 against the US dollar in lacklustre activity due to weakness in Asian equity markets. At the Interbank Foreign Exchange (forex) market, the local currency resumed at 39.40/41 a dollar and later moved in a narrow range of 39.3900 and 39.4475 during the day.

Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of India fixed the reference rate for the US currency at Rs 39.43 per dollar and for the single European unit at Rs 57.76 per euro.The rupee premiums on forward dollar ended lower due to sustained receiving by exporters.

The benchmark six-month forward dollar premiums payable in June ended slightly lower at 29 - 31 paise from 30-1/2 - 32 paise on Tuesday and the far-forward maturing in December also eased to 45 - 47 paise from 48 - 50 paise previously.

In cross-currency trades, the rupee turned weak against the British Sterling, the euro and the Japanese Yen.The Indian unit eased against the Sterling to end the day at Rs 78.20/22 per pound from previous close of Rs 78.19/21 per pound and fell sharply against the single European currency to Rs 57.91/93 per euro against yesterday''s close of Rs 57.49/51 per euro.The rupee also fell against the Japanese Yen to Rs 35.36/38 per 100 yen from last close of Rs 35.29/31 per 100 yen.
